Though America is a country built around constitutional freedom, there is an ongoing dispute concerning what literature should be accessible to students in a school setting. Controversial books are removed from curriculum and school libraries each year in the field of education through book challenges.

The Memorex nostalgia of my childhood isn’t in black and white or vivid color, but in the mousy brown of moving boxes. I lost count of how many times my mom and I packed up and hit the road in the wood-paneled station wagon of my youth, how many towns we passed through, how many schools I attended.

Fred Rogers, our favorite neighbor, said, “When I was very young, most of my childhood heroes wore capes….But as I grew, my heroes changes, so that now I can honestly say that anyone who does anything to help a child is a hero to me” (2019).
